Barbaro, the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner who broke his leg in the Preakness, was euthanized this morning.
Owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson made the decision in consideration of the pain Barbaro was experiencing. The doctor who performed the euthanasia was his primary veterinarian Dean Richardson.
- fractured his right hind leg at Pimlico
- then laminitis in the left rear hoof and abscess in the right rear hoof
(laminitis also responsible for the death of the 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat)
