The magazine sent trained testers to take their coffee black at McDonald's, Starbucks, Burger King and Dunkin' Donuts. The winner was McDonald's Premium Roast — "cheapest and best."
Starbucks coffee was described as “strong, but burnt and bitter enough to make your eyes water instead of open.”
For the record, I stopped going to McDonald's as soon as I could afford not to. And Starbucks I've only patronized once, and this was several years ago when I was stuck in the middle of a foreign country dying from heat exhaustion and with no other source of beverage.
