Hillary's team scored a hit with this campaign promotion. Her first "advice solicitation" video was viewed 600,000 times on YouTube and her Round 2 follow-up has gotten 250,000 views. Sure, there are a lot of negative comments, but those are from people who already hated her from the start. She got a buzz going among websurfers who normally wouldn't bother tuning in to her.
What I like about the vote site is that you can listen to the song choices without any hassle!
The five campaign picks that got the most votes in Round One:
* "Suddenly I See," KT Tunstall
* "Rock This Country!" Shania Twain
* "Beautiful Day," U2
* "Get Ready," The Temptations
* "I'm a Believer," Smash Mouth
The top write-in suggestions:
* "Are You Gonna Go My Way," Lenny Kravitz
* "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now," McFadden & Whitehead
* "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," The Police
* "You and I," Celine Dion
* "The Best," Tina Turner
Someone was sad that Mitch Ryder's "Devil With a Blue Dress" isn't on the list. Other songs that didn't make the cut: Hall and Oates’s “Maneater,” R.E.M.’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know It,” Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction.” The Rolling Stones’ “She’s So Cold,” Foreigner’s “Cold as Ice,” and Lou Reed’s “Vicious.”
They say you shouldn't go with Shania Twain, Celine Dion or U2 because they're not Americans! I don't know... the song choices all sound equally good to me. But we need one that'll appeal to different generations. Let's go with...
Smashmouth's cover of "I'm a Believer"
(written by Neil Diamond for the Monkees)
What's the use in tryin'?
All you get is pain.
When I needed sunshine I got rain.
Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer!
I couldn't leave her if I tried.
Two new biographies of the senator came out this week. The more objective one is by Carl Bernstein, A Woman in Charge. It rehashes her biographical details... You may want to read more about her unsuccessful attempt at health care reform during her husband's first term. Bernstein talked to Betsey Wright (Governor Clinton's chief of staff in Arkansas) and Diane Blair (HRC's best friend), and got hold of letters Hillary wrote her boyfriend in college. This I did not know: In 1989, Bill told Hillary he had fallen in love with another woman and wanted a divorce. Hillary said no! The name of the woman? Marilyn Jo Jenkins, an Arkansas utility-company official.
If you're a Hillary hater, you'll enjoy Her Way: The Hopes and Ambitions of Hillary Rodham Clinton, by former NYT (!) reporters. According to their former employer's review, they purport that Bill and Hillary had a secret pact to first win the presidency for him and then for her. Okay...
Really, really hate Hillary? Then Angela "Bay" Buchanan's book is for you! The Extreme Makeover of Hillary (Rodham) Clinton. The author is the sister of Pat Buchanan and is the chairman of Team America, a political action committee founded by Tom Tancredo dedicated to fighting illegal immigration. On the Colbert Report, she said "Good luck finding a Mexican who can read English." Not as suave as her brother, is she?
I wish I had Hillary's toughness. I can't even stand hearing people report a car accident with "I rear-ended a Mexican the other day."
