Winners of the 2007 ALMA Awards

Did 17 miles on the bike watching the ALMA Awards, which were given out last weekend and aired on ABC last night. That's the American Latino Media Arts Awards. In Spanish "alma" means soul. It was created in 1995 by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR).

Eva Longoria and Mario Lopez opened up the show by salsa-ing (?) with the professionals from Dancing With the Stars. Tony Parker's fiancée did okay. She made the usual joke about Hispanics having big families. Carlos Mencia's comedic depth and timing wasn't as good as Alex Reymundo's, but I agree that "It's not cool that some of us get D's in Spanish." and that it's annoying that you could say you're from Honduras and get a reply of "So which part of Mexico is that?"

I was surprised at how classy the whole affair was... that is until the Boricua group Calle 13 came on — they had to mute all the curse words. Oh well, everyone needs to be represented. But earlier, before them, Prince delivered real star power along with percussionist Sheila E (that's Escovedo) as they did two songs from his album 3121 ("The Word" and "Get on the Boat") and then her 80s hit "The Glamorous Life." Prince wrote that song, you know! She wants to lead a glamorous life... Without love it ain't much.

Cheech Marin honored George Lopez, who had received a kidney from his wife and who later was handed a cowbell by Eva Longoria to perform "Low Rider" with War. It's become "the Chicano national anthem." (Mayor Villaraigosa congratulated George Lopez by making jokes. Ha, ha...) Beyonce sang "Irreplaceable" in Spanish from Madrid. Beautiful artwork on the stage by Patsy Valdez. White ribbons were worn for fair and effective immigration reform.

Babel, a movie I thought was poorly made, was a multiple winner. But Ana Ortiz and America Ferrera won for their work on ‘Ugly Betty.' Salma Hayek showed up on stage in black and very pregnant with the child of billionaire François-Henri Pinault. (I will not comment.)
